Local News

BUFFALO, NY (WIVB) The New York State Health Department confirms it is looking into an allegation of sexual assault in the Gowanda Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.

News 4 received a tip about an alleged sexual assault which is reported to have occurred in the dementia unit of the nursing home at about 4 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28. In response to an inquiry about that allegation, Jeffrey Hammond, a spokesman for the NY State Department of health would only say this:

“The safety and well-being of nursing home residents is of paramount importance to the Department of Health. Upon learning of this incident, we immediately opened an investigation.  These particular allegations are obviously extremely disturbing; however, as this is an ongoing investigation we cannot comment further.”

The Gowanda Rehabilitation and Nursing Center is a 160 bed facility. By law, nursing home employees must report allegations of abuse to the NY State Health Department within 48 hours, which appears to have been done in this case. The investigation continues.
