(WIVB) - The owner of an Amherst fence company has been sentenced to five years of probation after admitting to scamming dozens of customers in July.
Frederick DeNormand, 74, of Pendleton, was also ordered to write letters of apology to all of the victims as part of his probation, and because of the felony conviction, was forced to surrender his pistol permit. He also agreed to pay back $138,573 to the victims.
As of Monday, DeNormand has paid back $25,000, the Erie County DA's Office says.
In July, he pleaded guilty to first degree scheme to defraud. Between May 2016 and Sept. 2017, he accepted payment from over 50 clients to install fences on their properties and failed to perform any work.
DeNormand faced up to four years in prison for the crime.
Classic Fence and Lumber is no longer in operation.
