The City of Tonawanda Police have said in a statement that a missing jetskier has drowned.
The man went missing after what was initially thought to be a collision between a jetski and a boat, according to the statement.
Police now believe the incident was caused by a wake that threw two people off the jetski. The two people were then struck by a boat.
The incident happened in the Niagara River near Niawanda Park on Sunday afternoon.
The jetski operator, 51-year-old Ahmed Umar of Lackawanna, has been pronounced dead.
The other person on the jetski was an eight-year-old female family member of Umar. She suffered a cut on her foot.
The driver of the boat was a 59-year-old man from Niagara Falls.
The City of Tonawanda Fire, Police, Erie County Sheriff’s Office, Niagara County Sheriff’s Office, and the Coast Guard are engaged in this search.
A search for for Umar is ongoing.
