BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Buffalo program that brings fresh food to thousands of families every year hopes to expand. The idea moved forward on Tuesday as the Planning Board unanimously approved plans presented by the Massachusetts Avenue Project (MAP).

MAP has been farming at 387 Massachusetts Ave. since 2003. They hope to use $1.6 million dollars to turn the current building into a farmhouse with more extensive greenhouses.

The non-profit hopes a larger farmhouse would help them reach more people. Each year MAP takes food to 3,000 families using its mobile market. The organization also employs about 50 young adults who they train to become community leaders.

The mission is to bring people together over food and show the community how important nutrition and cooking are.

“I see this as a community hub where people can be inspired and gain education around food, agriculture, food systems and nutrition, and share their cultural food with each other,” said Diane Picard, the executive director.

The non-profit needs to raise about $900,000 dollars for its capital campaign. It also still needs zoning variances from the Common Council and the Council is expected to make a decision in two weeks.

If approved, construction will start in September.
