CASTILE, N.Y. (WIVB)- Wednesday, New York State Police raided the home of Wyoming County Judge Ron Carmichael, and arrested Castile Court Clerk Katherine Ryan.
“It’s shocking because these people are nice people,” said the Carmichael’s neighbor Yvonne Broman.
This all comes after a year and a half long investigation into the financial transactions of the court. According to court documents, Ryan stole more than $36,000 from the court over several years.
But it doesn’t end there; Ryan lives with Judge Carmichael; court documents state she’s dating his son.
Ryan is facing a string of felonies including two counts of Grand Larceny and drug charges.
During the course of the investigation police got a tip, which led them to raid the Carmichael’s home.
They found 60 marijuana plants, paraphernalia and methamphetamine.
“It’s just a small town and anybody that would even think of doing that, it’s horrible, it’s horrendous,” Broman told News 4.
She was surprised to hear the Judge’s name connected to the scandal.
The court found several people had paid their fines to the court, but Ryan allegedly failed to report it.
She worked as the Court Clerk for two judges, including Carmichael, from Jan. 2009 to Dec. 2013.
“If she did take the money and she didn’t have a right to it then she should have to pay it back,” said a local Pastor of Ryan.
Prosecutors claim Carmichael wasn’t keeping a close enough eye on his court’s translations.
Neither Carmichael or his wife are facing any charges related to this case, but following the raid, he announced he would step down from his potion, effective July 31st.
Ryan remains in custody in Wyoming County with $10,000 bail.
