Severe thunderstorms leave thousands without power across Western New York

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB)– Severe weather left more than 4,000 National Grid customers without power Tuesday as storms made their way across Western New York.

National Grid’s power outage map showed 4,637 customers without power as of 8:25 p.m.

People who live on Niagara Falls Boulevard say the chaos all took place within a half-hour and at times, it felt like the wind was coming from all different directions.

Resident Chris Burgio says those who live close by to West Canal Marina Park are used to seeing trees falling down and causing damage like this.

“It happens every year. These are cottonwoods across the street and they’re fragile hardwood and they come busting down every year.”

With all of this debris bringing down power lines, officials say if you do come across one on the ground stay away and treat it as if it is live before contacting National Grid.
