Sheriff: Driver charged in triple-fatal used fake ID to buy alcohol

The 20-year-old charged after a crash in Wyoming County over Memorial Day weekend that killed three members of a New Jersey family bought alcohol with a fake ID in the hours before, according to the Wyoming County sheriff.

Richard Sawicki of Lackawanna stands accused of aggravated vehicular homicide, driving while intoxicated and reckless driving.

A minivan with nine people inside was en route from New Jersey to Niagara Falls when around 6:30 a.m. Sunday, it crashed with a pickup at an intersection on Route 20A in the town of Sheldon. The minivan had the right of way, according to the preliminary investigation.

The three people killed were a mother, daughter, and granddaughter: Ondina De La Cruz, 47; Mayelin Brito-Castro, 32; and her 4-year-old daughter.

The sheriff said Friday that Sawicki bought alcohol at an Attica store on Saturday night.
