State plans to turn empty space at psych center into neurobehavioral unit

Local News

Empty space at the Buffalo Psychiatric Center could be filled soon.

State officials plan to add a neurobehavioral unit at the center on Forest Ave. in Buffalo.

The information was shared at a legislature committee meeting Thursday morning.

Erie County’s Commissioner of Mental Health says the closest one like it is in Baltimore, so it would be a welcome sight here in western New York.

County officials say this could fill a big need.

“What OMH and the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities is anticipating doing, since there is not this option in New York State presently, is a neurobehavioral inpatient unit,” Erie County Commissioner of Mental Health Mike Ranney said.

The state is planning to develop the plans between now and the early part of next year.
