UPDATE: Dog found starving and cold in garbage tote is being treated at SPCA

(WIVB) - A male pit bull found starving and cold inside of a garbage tote Tuesday morning is being treated by the SPCA Serving Erie County.

The dog, who has been named "Charlie", was emaciated, dehydrated, and had a body temperature of only 90 degrees when he was found by a Buffalo sanitation worker.

Charlie has gained some weight- three or four lbs.- since being brought into the SPCA, SPCA staff said in a Facebook live video Wednesday. Most of the weight gain is likely due to being rehydrated.

He is being treated for puncture wounds to the head and low hemoglobin in his blood, but Charlie has high spirits and is being cooperative, staff members say.

Staff say that they are "cautiously optimistic" that he will make a full recovery.

Charlie still needs to recover further before the possibilty of being put up for adoption, but those interested in helping can donate to the SPCA's Yelp for Help fund.

An investigation into who put Charlie into the tote is being conducted by the SPCA. Anyone with information can call 875-7360.
