BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Mayor Byron Brown and Buffalo Police held a press conference Monday afternoon to discuss non-lethal technology for taking suspects into custody.
Mayor Brown says officers should use other ways than lethal force when possible.
The press conference included a demonstration of the “BolaWrap”.
The BolaWrap shoots out a Kevlar cord with hooks and hooks around a person’s arms or legs to immobilize them.
Mayor Brown says that could help bridge the gap between police and the people they serve.
“The more we can come together, with sound ideas, the more we can accomplish collectively as a community,” Mayor Brown said.
Police say that if a suspect tries to escape from the Bola Wrap, the hooks actually dig deeper, preventing an escape and allowing arrest.
Over 200 other police departments already use the device.
