(WIVB) - Wednesday marks the 117th anniversary of the day a school teacher from Michigan became the first person to survive a trip over Niagara Falls in a barrel.
Annie Edson Taylor was 63 on Oct. 24, 1901 when she spent her birthday performing the daredevil stunt, along with her cat.
According to InfoNiagara.com, the Pan-American Exposition was taking place at the time, and Taylor thought she would be able to attract a large crowd.
The only injury she received was a cut on her forehead while being extracted from the barrel after the plunge.
After, she said she would never attempt to go over the falls again.
