PORTLAND, N.Y. (WIVB) — UPDATE: The National Weather Service has classified the tornado as an EF1 category, in other words weak, with estimated maximum wind speed at 100 mph and maximum path width at 35 yards.
According to the NWS, the path length was 1.5 miles.
Officials tell News 4 a funnel cloud developed on the south side of Barnes Road just west of 6339 Barnes Road.
The tornado initially touched down in a wooded area then moved across the property.
A 60×80 foot garage was flattened, and a 53 foot semi trailer was lifted and rotated and set down approximately 150 feet away, the National Weather Service says.
The tornado also destroyed the majority of an 80×50 foot barn with only the front facade remaining.
Windows of the home on the property were sucked out with torrential rains causing water damage to the interior of the home.
NWS officials say some livestock suffered minor injuries.
The tornado then traveled across Barnes road where approximately 275 yards away, half of the second story of a barn was torn away.
It then continued about 500 yards damaging two barns on the east and west side of Thayer Road.
From there, NWS says the tornado continued approximately another 1,500 yards with the last tree damage visible toward the east end of Farr Road.
Officials are reporting no injuries and no fatalities.
ORIGINAL A tornado touched down in a Chautauqua County town on Thursday.
National Weather Service tells News 4 Meteorologist Mike Cejka the tornado came down in Portland. It’s not clear how strong the tornado was, or how long it was on the ground.
On Thursday, a two-story barn on Barns Rd. was destroyed during the severe weather. The roof of the barn next to it came off, too.
