Wing Fest welcomes beer, cocktails to event

BUFFALO, N.Y.(WIVB)- It’s back: Buffalo’s celebration of all things wings.

The 14th annual Buffalo Wing Fest will be at Coca-Cola Field Labor Day Weekend.

To satisfy the anticipated 70,000 attendees, more than 30 tons of chicken wings are en route to the Queen City for the big event.

Until they arrive, some popular vendors gathered at Niagara Square Wednesday alongside local officials and event organizers to celebrate this year’s festival.

Organizers also unveiled what’s new this year: they’re getting crafty.

“I talked to the committee, I talked to a lot of people around Buffalo about finding ways to draw younger people like the Millennials, the 18-34s and just do different types of things. It was right in front of us the whole time: what’s the best thing to go with wings?” asked the Wing King himself, festival founder Drew Cerza.

The answer of course: beer.

2015 Wing Fest will offer local craft beer and cocktails, and pair the drinks with specialty “craft wings.”

But that’s not all that’s in store.

Everything from peanut butter and jelly wings, to blackberry barbecue wings, and other varieties from more than 30 local, state, national  and international eateries.

Lloyd’s Taco Truck is even debuting its first “chicken wing taco” at the festival.

“Everybody’s embraced this festival, from the government officials to the charities to the media, to all the attendees who come from all over the world,” Cerza said.

There will be more than 120 different varieties of wings to try at Wing Fest.

Admission is $5, and kids under eight can attend for free.

The festival benefits Alzheimer’s Association Western New York Chapter, Food Bank of Western New York, and Meals on Wheels for Western New York Inc.
