UPDATE: National Grid says power has been restored to Parkside neighborhood. Buffalo Zoo still without power.

ORIGINAL: Buffalo Police and Fire crews were busy this morning dealing with numerous traffic signals being out in the Parkside neighborhood.

Officials noted they were investigating smoke coming from a manhole cover on Amherst Street and Greenfield Street.

The signal is still out at Amherst Street and Parkside Avenue, as well as Amherst and Colvin Avenue. Residents in that area are also dealing with power outages.

National Grid is on the scene working to restore power. Police ask people to avoid that area if possible.

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz tweeted approximately 800 customers are affected in the Parkside neighborhood due to an underground cable burnout.

Poloncarz also says due to the cold temperatures and expected delays in power restoration the city may open a warming shelter.

Buffalo Council Member Joel Feroleto has opened a warming shelter for those affected by the power outage at the North Buffalo Community Center at 203 Sanders Road.

Feroleto says residents should start seeing restoration later this afternoon, some residents won’t have power until midnight.

National Grid crews are working on the issue at the Buffalo Zoo and the estimated restoration time is sometime around 11 p.m.
