DogSpot offering pet-huts at certain NYS Thruway service areas

CHITTENANGO, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - Dog owners looking to take a break with their pet while traveling along the NYS Thruway now have a new option called DogSpot.

The portable pet-huts are available for use at four Thruway service areas in Central New York, including the Chittenango, Oneida, Junius Ponds, and Clifton Springs plazas as well as the Pattersonville plaza.

One is also located at the Chautauqua Mall Five and others along I-87.

DogSpot Communications Director, Rebecca Eyre says these temporary-stay shelters provide dog owners peace of mind and a safe place to put their pooch when they head inside a service area.

"They've been an amazing partner for us to provide a safe place, an air-conditioned place even for dogs to wait and not in the hot cars, which is a huge problem in the summertime," said Eyre.

The huts have a front-facing window, are vet approved, self-sanitize using UV light, and operate using the DogSpot app, which also includes a "puppy cam" that goes directly to your phone.

"It's similar to Car2Go, you download the app and then it's pay per use. It costs 30 cents per minute because most of the stays are short it ends up being a really affordable solution while you go somewhere your dog can't go," said Eyre.

Pet owners reserve a spot 15 minutes before their arrival and unlock the door with their phone when they arrive.

Owners can reserve a spot 15 minutes before their arrival and unlock the door simply using their phone.

The app is available for download in the App Store and Google Play.
