(WSAV) — Just days after Martin Luther King Day, Georgia was hit with a new wave of hate as flyers circulating through Valdosta promoted recruitment to the Klu Klux Klan and asked readers to help “stop the spread of Islam in our country.”

Media General contributors reached out to the Georgia NAACP President, Rev. Dr. Francys Johnson to hear what he thought of the flyers.

“The KKK and other hateful groups are terrorist groups, domestic terrorist groups and they should be handled like the thugs that they are,” he said.

He also said, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, there has been a dramatic rise in the number of hate groups in the U.S. in the past few years.

“A part of it is fear,” said Johnson. “Fear of a shrinking majority in the country and a new rising majority of people of color. A sense that America is slipping as what people have identified as her identity which is white, male and privileged, and the world is simply changing.”

Similar flyers were left on lawns in Alabama as well.

“We should learn that we’ve got to take these threats seriously,” said Johnson. “We expect law enforcement to certainly follow up with the kind of seriousness that this warrants.”
