The United States is currently in the third week of a partial government shutdown and hundreds of thousands of government workers are either furloughed or working without pay.

It’s a stressful time for those workers and many people are wondering how they can help – or how they can buy one of the workers a drink.

Thanks to a new website, you can buy federal workers in Washington a beer no matter where you are in the country.

Pay It Furloughed launched earlier this week. It allows people to go online and donate to a beer fund that will pay for local craft brews for federal employees and contractors who are impacted by the shutdown.

“Free beer is a great way to pick people up when they’re feeling down,” the website says.

If you’re interested in buying a beer (or several) for federal workers, all you have to do is go on the Pay It Furloughed website and click “Fund a beer!” You can then choose how many beers you want to fund or how much money you want to donate.

That money will go to one of four breweries in the D.C. area where federal employees who are 21 and older can score their beer.

“The price covers the cost of the beer, including 10 percent D.C. sales tax, credit card processing fees and website maintenance,” the site says.

The Pay It Furloughed home page has a live tracker so federal workers can see how many beers are available to be claimed. All the employees have to do is go to any of the participating breweries and show their federal ID.

On Wednesday afternoon, Pay It Furloughed showed more than 1,400 beers available. Since the site launched on Sunday, nearly 1,600 beers have been donated and more than 130 have been claimed.

Right now, the free beers are only available in the Washington, D.C. area but according to the website, organizers intend on using this model in other communities in the future.
