Finger Lakes native among three killed in California garlic festival shooting

GILROY, Calif. (WSYR and KRON) — Three people were killed in a shooting at an internationally-known festival in Northern California; among them, a Finger Lakes native and recent graduate of Keuka College.

Trevor Irby was a biology major who graduated from the small college in Yates County in 2017. According to Irby’s Facebook page, he also graduated from Romulus High School.

We are shocked that this latest episode of senseless gun violence resulted in the loss of one of our recent graduates—graduates in whom we place so much hope because of their potential to create a brighter tomorrow.

Keuka College President Amy Storey

Law enforcement officials said the gunman, identified as 19 years old, cut through a fence and opened fire on the crowd at the popular festival, about 30 miles southeast of San Jose. Besides Irby, two children were also killed and 15 others were wounded before police killed the suspect.

The children who died were a 6-year-old boy, Stephen Romero, and a 13-year-old girl, Keyla Salazar.
