The University of Manchester is encouraging students to use non-audible clapping at certain events.
Last the university’s Students’ Union passed a motion to encourage the use of British Sign Language (BSL) clapping during its democratic events. The motion is not banning audible clapping.
“Inclusivity is one of the Students’ Union’s founding principles. We recognise that minority groups are underrepresented in political environments and we are working to address that. This policy is one way of doing so inside our Union.”
The Union says it has received positive responses from disabled students, some of whom are deaf or autistic, who are pleased about the motion.
