New Era workers rally outside of Derby plant

News

Dozens of people rallied outside of the New Era plant in Derby on Wednesday during an employee shift change, in support of preserving jobs for 200 employees.

New Era plans to shut down the plant in March.

All baseball caps worn during Major League Baseball games are made in Western New York- but unless something changes, those jobs are being moved to Miami.

“This is an important thing, this is hurting this community as well, the community of Angola, Derby, Evans, because if the plant shuts down, tax revenues go down, and that will hurt the entire community,” said Richard Lipsitz of the WNY area Labor Federation.

The State Labor Department’s “Rapid Response Team” is working to help find new jobs for the New Era workers. Companies in Western New York have also asked New Era about giving the employees new jobs.
