There are just hours left in this year’s Fill the Backpack campaign as we look to collect 175,000 lbs. of food to ensure no child goes hungry on the weekends or over the summer when they’re out of school.
The bags of food you purchase during the donation drives at Wegmans every year go straight to FeedMore WNY to distribute to 3,500 children at 52 schools in four counties in Western New York.
Volunteers sort and pack bags of the food for the students every single week.
This week, the News 4 staff will have the chance to do just that.
Our employer, Nexstar, is once again allowing us to use part of our work days to work at the FeedMore WNY warehouse as part of the Founder’s Day of Caring initiative.
“It feels great knowing that you’re helping thousands of people in Western New York feed those folks who might otherwise have an empty table,” News 4’s Al Vaughters said while volunteering at the food bank warehouse back in 2017.
This will the third year News 4 is volunteering for the Founder’s Day of Caring at the food bank’s facilities on Holt Street. Our staff will be filling volunteer shifts there Monday and Tuesday this week.
“Founder’s Day is a wonderful event,” said Catherine Shick, Communications Director for FeedMore WNY. “We’re so grateful to have the support of WIVB.”
On top of filling bags for the Fill the Backpack program, the News 4 team will also spend the next two days sorting food to be distributed to FeedMore WNY’s network of food pantries and partners. And, we’ll have the chance to get our hands dirty in the community garden, which provides nutrition education and fresh produce for local families.
“We’re going to put News 4 to work,” Shick laughed. “So we’re going to make sure that we make a dent in making sure that we get food out into the community.”
“But hunger is 365 days a year,” she added, “so if we didn’t have the support of our volunteers all year long, we simply could not continue our mission.”
FeedMore WNY is always in need of more help, whether you’re giving food, money, or your time as a volunteer, in the warehouse or even delivering Meals on Wheels.
“So there’s no one way to get involved. We have plenty of opportunity and we’re always looking for people to help in order for us to feed more,” Shick said.
