WHEATFIELD, N.Y. (WIVB) — Officials say a non-hazardous spill occurred Sunday at the Niagara BioEnergy facility in Wheatfield.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation representative Kristen Davidson says “the spill consisted of foamy food waste substance” coming from an on-site anaerobic digestion tank.

The foam was collecting at the base of the tank as it leaked from the top.

Davidson says the foam was contained to the gravel surrounding the tank and that no adverse environmental impacts were observed.

The spill is being blamed on a failure in the tank’s pressure relief system and Davidson says repairs will take place.

The company was still cleaning up the area and collecting impacted water as of Tuesday morning.
