Opening of Lake Erie-Niagara River ice boom to be delayed

The International Joint Commission says the Lake Erie-Niagara River ice boom will be opened after April 1.

The current International Joint Commission Order of Approval requires that the ice boom be opened by the start of April unless there is more than 250 square miles of ice on eastern Lake Erie.

Last year, the ice boom opened on April 10, but the latest start was May 3 in 1971.

The earliest start was February 28, 2012.

Although it looks like a typical winter day outside, the temperatures are supposed to be more spring-like during the rest of the week.
