Police: Detective prevents stabbing in Cheektowaga

CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WIVB) — A heated situation could have taken a turn for the worse, but Cheektowaga Police say a detective helped stop a stabbing on Alpine Place.

Police say a woman armed with a 12-inch steak knife chased a 67-year-old man in an attempt to stab him around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

When a detective arrived, police say the woman was seen chasing a different person — the man’s 35-year-old daughter.

The detective then ordered the knife-wielder, identified as Brenda Collins, 52, to drop her weapon.

Police say Collins, who was ordered to drop the knife at gunpoint, instead pointed the weapon at the detective. It took a second command for Collins to drop the knife, police say.

Police took Collins into custody after the incident and began to question her and the others involved.

The man’s daughter told police that an argument had occurred between Collins and the man, who lives in her apartment complex.

When Collins allegedly started hitting the man, the man’s daughter got involved, according to police.

At this point, the female victim told police that Collins went into the apartment and came back out with a knife, yelling “I’m going to slit your throat and kill you.” That is when the chasing began, according to police.

Collins was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, menacing a police officer and assault. She was jailed on $1,500 bail.
