U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers prevented a human smuggling attempt at the Peace Bridge early Friday morning.

According to CBP reports, around 1:45 a.m., CBP officers working at the Peace Bridge encountered a vehicle driven by 23-year-old Yehven Lysak, a U.S. citizen.

He told officers he was returning to his residence in Pennsylvania after visiting his girlfriend in Canada.

CBP officers allegedly noticed him acting nervously and performed a trunk inspection. 21-year-old Viktoria Tanasiv, a Ukraine citizen, was located in the trunk.

Lysak was arrested and pleaded guilty to neglecting to assist a customs officer. He was released.

Tanasiv was arrested by Special Agents with Homeland Security Investigations, fined and released to immigration authorities.
