HAMBURG, N.Y. (WIVB) – Hamburg senior Joe DeGrood is the latest News 4 Scholar Athlete, one of two winners for the month of March.
DeGrood is a team captain both basketball and football, carrying a 95 average in the classroom.
“Joe is a tenacious student,” said AP Calculus teacher Derek Hill. “I think the same attitude he brings to the football field, it is undeniable in the classroom too.”
Both on and off the field, he sets an example for others.
“Joe is a mature athlete,” said Hamburg varsity football coach Pat Cauley. “It is like having an adult on your team. He is extremely intelligent, he is very coachable, and he is a very positive influence on the other players.”
DeGrood also leads his team by showing them the importance of academics. He will attend Hobart in the fall and play football.
“It is a lot of time management. You have to know how to balance your schedule. Wake up in the morning, go to school, get to practice, get that done, then as much physically as you devote to sports, you have to devote mentally to your academics,” said DeGrood.
Joe hopes to pursue a career in business.
