29-year-old Gregory Roy has been charged with the murder of his stepfather Rudy Ray Rockett Sr.

Rockett, who was from California, went missing in western New York in April. After weeks of searching, investigators found his body in Cattaraugus County last month.

“I’m still trying to process it,” said Rudy Ray Rockett Jr., during a phone interview with News 4 Friday.

He’s says dealing with the death of his father, 64-year-old Ruddy Ray Rockett Sr. was already a tough pill to swallow.

“I’m a little bit kind of in shock,” said Rockett Jr.

But now it’s even harder to learn his stepbrother, 29-year-old Gregory Roy, is charged with his father’s murder.

“I’m glad it is a murder charge, I’ve had that feeling the whole time,” said Rockett Jr.

“The suspect in this case has not talked to us what so ever so we’re really not quite sure of a motive,” said Niagara County Sheriff Jim Voutour.

Voutour says Roy shot his stepfather several times during what was supposed to be a ride to the Buffalo airport on April 29th. Rockett Sr. was headed back to California.

“I can tell you the length of time it took him to leave his house and had towards the Buffalo airport greatly exceeded that time which led us to believe that the victim would’ve known that that ride was not taking him to the airport,” said Voutour.

Search crews spent weeks looking for Rockett. Investigators found his body in East Otto last month after getting a tip from neighbors.

Roy was arraigned in Niagara County Friday afternoon, but wouldn’t leave his cell at first so the judge had to issue a drag order.

“It doesn’t surprise me just for the fact that some of his family had tried to see him and he wouldn’t, he wouldn’t see his family,” said Rockett Jr.

Rockett Jr., who lives in Oklahoma, says he just held a memorial service there for his father which makes this news even harder to hear.

“It’s still rough though. Things go well for a while then something reminds you of him or you’ll hear something and it’s hard,” said Rockett Jr.

Roy has also been charged with criminal possession of a weapon. Voutour says they’re investigation how he got a gun because he didn’t have a New York State pistol permit.
