XIAMEN, China (KRON) - A woman in China was recently diagnosed with a rare hearing-loss condition that prevents her from hearing the voices of men.
According to the Daily Mail, the woman woke up one morning unable to hear the voice of her boyfriend.
The woman was rushed to Qianpu Hospital, where she was diagnosed by an ear, nose and throat specialist with a very rare condition called reverse-slope hearing loss (RSHL).
According to the Thigpen Hering Center, for every 12,000 cases of hearing loss, only one person has RSHL.
Those with the condition usually have trouble hearing low-frequency and deeper sounds, such as men's voices.
“She was able to hear me when I spoke to her, but when a young male patient walked in, she couldn't hear him at all,” Lin Xiaoqing, the doctor who treated the woman said to the Daily Mail.
The woman told her doctor she had recently been under lots of stress and had not been getting sufficient sleep, which Xiaoqing says could have been a contributing factor.
The woman also reported feeling nauseous and a ringing sound in her ears the night before.
Doctors say she is expected to fully recover.
