The ten 2017-2018 scholar athletes were honored Wednesday afternoon for their achievements on the field and in the classroom throughout the school year. Lancaster’s Ben Mazur and Kenmore West’s Abby Borkowski both took home the top honors, receiving the Scholar Athlete Scholarship.
“For me to go into the future and know that I have support still, it’s unbelievable that peopel still care about scholar athletes,” said Borkowski.
“It’s a great honor,” added Mazur. “There’s amazing other winners as well and I know a couple of them and it just shows what a great honor it is.”
Both scholarship winners will head to St. Bonavanture next year. Ironically enough, when it came to the advice they had for aspiring scholar athletes, the two had the exact same mindset.
“The secret is to get involved, always,” said Borkowski. “Don’t be afraid to go out there, to speak your voice, that’s what you’re there for. Make the most of your high school experience.”
“I would say get involved early and often with a wide range of things,” noted Mazur. “Through that you meet new people and teachers and coaches and through that way I was really able to reach out to a lot of people and it helped me.”
WIVB and Transitowne Automotive Group congratulate all the Scholar Athletes and nominees, and wish them nothing but the best of luck in their future endeavors.
