BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - The future is officially now for the Sabres -- all the offseason moves to improve the roster with of course the biggest being Rasmus Dahlin.
Fans packed into HarborCenter bright and early Friday morning to catch a glimpse of the No. 1 overall pick, who is still in awe of the passionate fan base.
"There are so many out there,” Dahlin said after practice. “I love to play in front of them.”
Dahlin skated alongside Jake McCabe during the early session of practice. And while it may only be day one the rookie blueliner has already impressed the veteran defenseman.
"The guys an incredible talent as we all know by this point. He's going to push me and make me a better player,” McCabe said. “I'm going to try to help him along with the North American game, talk to him as much as I can to help and develop his game on both ends of the rink."
"It was great to play with (McCabe),” added Dahlin. “He talked a lot. I think he's going to (teach) me a lot. I'm enjoying playing with him."
McCabe is likely the first of many partners Dahlin will have throughout training camp and preseason as head coach Phil Housley works to find some early chemistry for his rookie defenseman.
“I just felt Jake could play the right side and it was a good mix,” Housley said following practices. “You have a veteran guy with a young guy, trying to mentor him and Jake is a good player for that."
The Sabres return to practice on Saturday, scrimmage on Sunday and then have their first preseason game Monday against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
