Dancing with the Bulls Tournament Special: Scouting #11 Arizona State & #11 St. John’s

We begin our scouting report with Arizona State.

Former Bulls head coach Bobby Hurley is in his fourth season with Sun Devils.

Hurley hired Nate Oats as an assistant and would make for a heck of storyline if they advance to play UB in Tulsa.

ASU enters the tournament with a 22-10 record. The Sun Devils are a well-balanced team

Luguentz Dort is their leading scorer at 16 points per game while Remy Martin adds 13 points and leads the team in assists. Zylan Cheatham averages a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Just like Arizona State, St. John’s is led by coach who was an excellent a college player and in this case a Hall of Famer. Chris Mullen is in his fourth season and led the Red Storm to a 21-12 record.

St. John’s is led by one of the most dynamic guards in the nation in Shamorie Pond. The future NBA draft pick is averaging 19.5 points per game and lead the team in assists.

He is one of five players in double figures for the Red Storm as Mustapha Heron is second at nearly 15 points per game.

Statistically, UB is better than both teams. The Bulls averaged 85 points per game this season while the Sun Devils and Red Storm each averaged just 77 points. It’s the same story on the other side of the ball as well. Defensively UB allows three points fewer that Arizona State and they allow four fewer than St. John’s.

UB also has a better field goal percentage than both teams they could face. 3-point field goal percentage is the only major statistical category which UB trails both teams.

Finally, which team is hotter entering the tournament?

St. John’s is 4-6 over their last 10 games and Arizona State is 7-3 over their last 10.
