Jack Eichel scored twice and Rasmus Dahlin added another in the third period, but it wasn’t enough as the defending Cup champs from Washington bested the Blue & Gold in a shootout for 4-3 victory Saturday night.

Prior to the game, head coach Phil Housley said he wanted his team to have a fast start against the Capitals and the Sabres’ captain delivered less than three minutes into the game.

With the power play expiring, Dahlin fired a shot off the pads of Pheonix Copley, which bounced right to the stick of Eichel. The star centerman wasted little time giving the Blue & Gold a 1-0 lead.

The Caps would respond with two quick goals of their own to take a one goal advantage in the second period.

That lead was short lived as the Sabres’ captain opened the second with another highlight reel goal.

On the power play, Eichel skated through Washington’s defense and then ripped a shot past Copley for his second tally of the night.

Dahlin would add his third goal of the year a few minutes later before Alexander Ovechkin tied the game at three with his league leading 29th goal.

Ovechkin would score what proved to be the game-winning goal in the shootout as Copley stoned Jason Pominville to help secure the win.

The Sabres return to the ice Sunday to battle the Bruins.
