Inside The Buffalo Huddle

Zay Jones "grateful" and "thankful" to be alive and back playing football

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - It's not doubt been a long offseason for Zay Jones.

The wide receiver took his first steps at getting back on the football field on Sunday, wearing a red non-contract jersey and participating in drills.

Speaking with the media after practice, Jones expressed gratitude for being alive and to still be able to paly football.

"You know, I could have lost my life," Jones said.  "To be here, to be on this field and to be with my teammates and to see my family, I don't think there's any other words that describe it but grateful and thankful."

The scars on his knee,  reminder of a near fateful night in a Los Angeles apartment complex in March.

"I think I'd be doing myself a great disservice if I went back to there," Jones said of not wanting to discuss the incident in which he was arrested but never charged.  "That moment was very traumatic for me and my family. To rehash that now, at this time wouldn't' be doing me any good.  I'm just trying to look forward."

Head Coach Sean McDermott has repeatedly said Jones is behind in terms of getting up to speed with the offense and Jones knows he has a long road ahead.

"A lot of this game is mental. There is a mental aspect that goes into it -- the film study, understand the playbook, the scheme -- and I've had time to take a step back and understand all of it," he said. "So, I'd say I'm progressing in other areas.   I haven't been on the field but all that stuff will come eventually."

"We have our work cutout for us and Zay knows that," McDermott said ahead of practice on Sunday.  "It's not something that can't be achieved.  We just have to work at it and get him up to speed as quickly as we can."

"I'm at peace. It's fun to be out there with the guys," the receiver added. "Just getting back in the swing of things and getting back to what I love."
