Scholar Athlete: Andrew Musacchio

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Gowanda football coach Sean Gabel knows the Musacchio family pretty well.

"I was actually his father's ball boy when he played (football) here," Gabel said.  "So, I got to know the father before the son and know what kind of hard worker his dad was.  His boy resembles everything and even more just a well-rounded young man."

That young man is Andrew, who is a senior at Gowanda, and exemplifies what it means to be a student-athlete, excelling in the classroom with a 98-grade point average and on the field, serving as captain for a second straight year with the Panthers.

"You've got to put the time in," Andrew said.  "You have to go home, study, make some sacrifices but you can still have fun, too. If you're not having fun doing it, there's no point in doing it."

Andrew says his favorite subjects in school are math and science.

"I like the problem solving of it," he says.  "It's kind of like a game almost."

When he's not studying the playbook or preparing for school, Andrew is out in the community volunteering with his church, and even helped build a playground.

"You have to help other people, too," he said.  "You have to be selfless not selfish."

"He's a great student," added Gable.  "He volunteers, he's humble, he's hungry.  Just a hardworking young man who loves to play with his brothers and family. It's going to hurt when he goes."
