It was a Sunday filled with Big 4 basketball in Western New York, as Canisius, Niagara and St. Bonaventure all hosted conference matchups.
St. Bonaventure handily defeated George Mason 79-56. Freshman Kyle Lofton scored a career high 32 points in the blowout. Lofton was 10-15 from the floor, 7-8 from the arc and a perfect 5-5 from the free throw line.
Head Coach Mark Schmidt became the Bonnies’ all-time coaching wins leader with 203 wins at the helm. He passed Larry Weise, who guided St. Bonaventure to 202 wins over 12 seasons from 1961-73. St Bonaventure currently sits 7th in the Atlantic 10 standings. Bona hosts La Salle Wednesday night.
The Niagara men edged Fairfield 78-73 Sunday afternoon, snapping their four game losing streak. Both teams stayed close throughout, and the matchup featured five ties and 10 lead changes. Dominic Robb tallied a career high 23 points in the victory. The Purple Eagles head to Ryder for a Friday night matchup.
Canisius would fall on the afternoon to Manhattan 70-65, snapping a three game win streak. This MAAC matchup also stayed close throughout the second half. However, the Jaspers shot 70 percent from the floor, and 80 percent from the arc in the second half to seal the victory. Jibreel Faulkner led all scorers with a career high 23 points. The Griffs travel to Monmouth Friday night.
