St. Joe’s Pulera creating new standard of excellence while carrying on former player’s legacy

You could say, Kellen Pulera has it all when it comes the game of lacrosse.

“It’s very natural —  aggressive, it’s power, soft hands” assistant coach Jackson Balkin said.  “He’s really the complete player and what you’re looking for as an attack.”

Since earning a spot on the varsity roster as a freshman four years ago, Kellen has used those skills to the best of his ability — and is now the program’s all-time leading scorer with 248 career points — and counting.

He’ll take his talents to Marist in the fall, which is fresh off winning the Metro Atlantic Championship.

“It’s been my dream ever since I was little to go play college lacrosse and now that that time has come and I’m able to do it, it’s unbelievable.  I love it.”

Aside from the points there is a number that holds even greater significance to Kellen and the Marauders.  23 — the number former St. Joe’s star Paul Englert  wore during his career.  He passed away from a pulminary embolism in 2013 and each year, one player is chosen to carry on Paul’s legacy. This year, his senior season, Kellen was chosen for that honor.

“The meaning to wear 23 is special. The heart, the leadership, everything Paul Englert had — being able to wear his number and represent him is something special.”

“I played with Paul myself, so it’s very near and dear to my heart.,” Jackson said.  “I didn’t really think there was anymore more fitting to wear it. he puts forth the effort that Paul put forward every day and that’s everything you look for.”

“I’m blessed that I get to wear it and put it on every day and I remember that I’m playing for him when I wear this jersey.”
